A content delivery network (CDN) is a network of servers designed for serving media content to end-users.  These servers are built for high availability and high performance so that the original content provider can distribute their content quickly, easily, and without suffering from bandwidth issues.

Examples of the types of content these networks distribute are videos, music, pictures, computer software, and even other computer files. We interact with CDNs every day often without realizing it.  Anyone with internet service has used CDNs to acquire media content in some form.  Some of the most popular CDNs include Akamai and Limelight.

 Content Delivery Networks

Limelight is an example of a website that provides a service using a CDN.  They utilize a cloud based CDN service that allows their users to broadcast live events. Their live streaming service allows for your HD video stream to be embedded on any website and it comes with a moderated chat that allows you to have a closer interaction with your viewers.
Akamai provides their powerful CDN services to business owners.  Their CDN service, called SOLA Sphere, utilizes the Akamai Intelligent Platform and claims to be the largest content delivery network in the world.  Limelight also provides CDN services to business owners.  Additionally, they are also the second biggest CDN infrastructure after Akamai.  According to their website some of their customers include BBC, Disney, EA, and Adobe.
Although these CDNs and many other CDNs offer their services for a fee, there are still a number of free CDN options available on the web that can be found with a quick Google search.
One of the most popular free CDN is Cloudfare. It claims to use the most recent CDN technology available, and at zero cost, “operating out of 24 data centers around the world.” They use technology that routes your website’s visitors to the data center nearest to you, and this saves bandwidth and increases content loading speed.
Other CDNs can be found online with a search.
Before picking a CDN, you may first want to do some research into a few CDNs to see which is best for your company, your visitors, and the type of content you are providing.
